Working in Long-Term Care (LTC) settings is a specialty that geropsychologists and other mental health professionals offer. It can be rewarding, interesting and inspiring. It can also be challenging, difficult and overwhelming. This class will provide an overview of the clinical and ethical issues to guide mental health professionals to work effectively within the LTC system.

With more than 15 years of providing psychological services in various types of LTC settings, Dr. Rosett has a deeply rooted interest in educating mental health professionals about this field. This class will help clinicians considering this specialty make a more informed decision about this work. For those who already are working in LTC, it can help them understand aspects of their work. Most importantly, it will include valuable information to the many who enter this work by “being thrown into the deep end” without sufficient knowledge or experience.

This introductory class will include distinguishing different types of LTC, with the focus on skilled nursing and assisted living care, providing direct care and indirect care, specific knowledge and procedures involved in offering direct care to residents, legal and ethical issues relavent to LTC work, and the valuable benefits of this specialty. Dr. Rosett will include case material and real experiences to illustrate key aspects of the culture and effective interventions when working in LTC settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the cultural and structural elements of LTC settings that impact working in them.
  • Identify at least three clinical issues frequently addressed when providing treatment within LTC settings.
  • Discuss at least three ways to provide indirect care when working in LTC settings.
  • Describe ethical and legal considerations when working in LTC settings.
