Older adults seek psychotherapy for a number of reasons, many of which are similar to adults of other age groups. However, often the treatment is more complex due to issues associated with normal aging, such as increased health concerns, changes in life circumstances, and gradual declining abilities. This introductory course will provide an overview of clinical issues frequently raised and ethical concerns specific to older adults. The importance of gerodiversity competencies and ageism will be incorporated into the course material. Additionally, modifications to the treatment interventions, to the office setting, and when using telehealth will be discussed. This class will include current research findings and extensive clinical case material, as well as time for questions and discussion.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least four clinical issues commonly experienced by older adults
  2. Describe at least two possible modifications to the interventions, the office setting or telehealth when working with older adults
  3. Discuss at least three ethical issues specific to providing services to older adults
