Psychologists are uniquely positioned to assess for capacity in many settings and are often called upon by other professionals to offer an opinion on capacity, yet most psychologists do not receive much didactic or clinical training specific to capacity assessment. Part TWO of this two-part course offers education about testing and report writing for capacity assessment with older adults. Topics covered will include considerations in test battery selection, a sample test battery, capacity interview techniques, strategies for navigating testing and interview barriers, elements of a strong capacity report, and working with attorneys in capacity cases. Case examples will be provided, and there will be time for questions and discussion.

This advanced level course is designed for psychologists who already have foundational knowledge and skills in assessment and are looking for specific testing and report writing techniques to build competence in capacity assessment with older adults. This course is not well-suited for those professionals for whom assessment is outside their scope or licensure. This is Part 2 of a two-part series on capacity assessment with older adults.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify elements of appropriate test batteries for evaluating capacity in older adults
  • Describe effective capacity interviewing techniques and ways to manage interview challenges
  • Describe effective report elements in capacity cases
